Dr. Gallagher was extremely happy and felt fortunate to be able to attend medical school at the University of Washington, which allowed for clinical rotations through the WWAMI collegiate exchange region, being especially grateful to be able to spend time back in Billings, Montana serving his community. His rotations in Billings with Billings Plastic Surgery allowed him to form long lasting relationships with his mentors Dr. Alan Muskett and Dr. Steven Grosso. He committed to an additional year in medical school doing plastic surgery research and finally, made the decision to pursue a career in plastic surgery because he, “enjoyed the extremely broad and fascinating specialty, and the diverse group of patients that we are fortunate to be able to help with a variety of cosmetic and reconstructive needs.” He followed medical school by attending a 6-year Integrated Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Residency program at Virginia Tech-Carilion in Roanoke, VA.

He trained under a talented group of Plastic Surgeons who helped him develop a broad and diverse set of skills, without having to share operative experience with fellows, which is rare in this era of surgical training. He presented new reconstructive techniques at regional and national plastic surgery conferences, and published these techniques in the premier journal of the specialty; the Journal of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
