I had a consultation with Dr. Kolker for a breast reduction. The exam was very thorough but the one thing thing that I didn't feel 100% about was he told me that I was bordering being too overweight to do the surgery, and that I should drop my BMI at least 4 points before the surgery (15-20 pounds). BMI wasn't an insurance thing- he doesn't take insurance and while research still uses BMI, it is a simplistic and in my mind a dangerous measurement tool, as it doesn't account at all for muscle mass or body type, just height and weight.

Seeing that I'm a size 8 and visibly just slightly chunky I didn't think this was justified. I have never been a skinny girl without starving myself, no matter how hard I've tried.

Luckily, Dr. Kolker and I had an extremely thorough and empathetic follow up talk about how this was upsetting to me and he really heard me out and gave me a refund on my consultation. I really appreciated him going the extra mile to do so. It is not his fault that research is based on BMI, and I hope soon research and surgeons will find a better measurement tool to judge if an individual is safely eligible for surgery.
