Dr. Stephen U. Harris, a board certified plastic surgeon, has extensive experience with today’s most advanced surgical techniques. He is known for his excellence in many areas of reconstructive and cosmetic surgery including facial aesthetic surgery, body contouring, and both cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery. He offers advanced care in reconstructive breast plastic surgery, focusing on breast reconstruction after mastectomy, correction of post lumpectomy breast deformities, and secondary correction of the unfavorable or failed result after breast reconstruction. Harris Plastic Surgery is also the center of excellence in rapid recovery breast reduction surgery.
Dr. Harris is Chief of Plastic Surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip, NY and is an active staff surgeon (and former Chief of Plastic Surgery) at North Shore LIJ-Southside Hospital in Bay Shore, NY, and a former consultant in breast reconstruction at Brookhaven Memorial Hospital (now Long Island Medical Center) in Patchogue, NY. His impressive medical training includes his MD degree from Boston University’s six year BA/MD program—from which he graduated magna cum laude; his general surgical training at the New York Hospital–Cornell University Medical Center; and his plastic surgical training at Emory University, which was followed by a fellowship in hand and microsurgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital–Harvard Medical School.
Dr. Harris is highly experienced in breast reconstruction surgery, treating more than 1,000 patients over the last decade. While at Emory University, Dr. Harris worked closely with Dr. John Bostwick, a pioneer in reconstructive breast surgery. He has extensive experience in staged tissue expander breast reconstruction techniques, direct-to-implant techniques, and the use of acellular dermal matrices, enhancing the results of implant-based reconstructive breast surgery. He was the first surgeon at Good Samaritan Hospital to offer primary prepectoral implant breast reconstruction, as well as secondary prepectoral revision surgery. He also has extensive experience in autologous flap techniques for breast reconstruction—including the TRAM flap, free TRAM flap, DIEP flap, SIEA flap, and latissimus flap. He pioneered microsurgical breast reconstruction, oncoplastic surgical techniques, nipple areolar sparing mastectomy techniques, and the use of fat grafting in reconstructive breast surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital. He was the first surgeon at Good Samaritan Hospital to offer primary prepectoral implant breast reconstruction as well as secondary prepectoral revision surgery. Dr. Harris is also on the leadership team for the Breast Reconstruction task force at Good Samaritan Hospital. He is active on the Medical Advisory Board of the West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition.
