Meet Dr. Carpenter Trained as an artist and naturally gifted with exceptional surgical precision, Dr. Carpenter chose to pursue plastic surgery because he saw it as a way to blend his artistic and surgical gifts (“Plus,” he says, “It’s a really cool job.”). While earning his undergraduate degree in Biology at The College of William and Mary, Dr Carpenter published artwork in the College’s art magazine, and had a side business designing and selling T-shirts at the College. After college, he completed his doctoral studies at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, followed by a General Surgery residency at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. He received his Plastic Surgery training at the Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. He settled in the mountains of Cumberland, Maryland to establish his private practice in 1995. He is Board-Certified in Plastic Surgery and a member of both the American Society of Plastic Surgery and the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. In cooperation with the Crippled Children’s League, Dr. Carpenter developed and is Medical Director of the Cumberland Cleft Clinic, an organization established to provide coordinated services for children with cleft lip and palate deformities, regardless of their ability to pay.

Dr. Carpenter’s personal life has been just as full as his professional. Dr. Carpenter served his country for 18 years in the Army Reserves Medical Corps, a service that included active duty status during the Iraq War in 2003. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 2006. Every year since, he has participated in annual medical missions to the Philippines to treat cleft lip and palate deformities in underprivileged children and residents. He lives happily in Cumberland with his wife, Judy, where they raised their five children. His hobbies include reading, skiing, hiking and tinkering with antique cars.
