Dr. Schmidt, a Texas native, graduated with a degree in psychology at Southern Methodist University before pursuing medical studies at The University of Texas School of Medicine in San Antonio.  After earning his medical doctorate, Dr. Schmidt was selected for a highly competitive Head and Neck Surgery residency in Omaha, NE.  In his final year, he became Chief Resident of the program and was responsible for teaching residents and medical students from the University of Nebraska Medical Center and Creighton University School of Medicine. Dr. Schmidt engaged in several scientific studies during his residency and was notably awarded for his research assessing the effects of melatonin in oxygen-starved tissues. During that same year, Dr. Schmidt also traveled with several other surgeons on a medical mission trip to Vietnam.

Following residency, Dr. Schmidt was selected from many of his surgical colleagues for a highly competitive training program in facial plastic and reconstructive surgery. This coveted fellowship is widely regarded as one of the world’s premier facial plastic surgery training institutions. During fellowship, which is the highest level of postdoctoral training a physician can undergo, Dr. Schmidt honed his skills by caring for thousands of patients undergoing cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the face. He states,

“I come from a family of artists.  When I started my practice, I thought of myself as an artist of sorts too – one that simply worked with a different medium.  Despite the parallels, the biggest difference is the impact my work has on my patient’s life story.  I am entrusted to combine the technical and dexterous aspects of surgery with an understanding of the human form and psyche to literally shape my patients. The real payoff for me is not as much in the physical result – it’s more about bringing joy and confidence to my patients and the ripple effect that has on the people that surround them. “

As a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon and an expert of facial anatomy, Dr. Schmidt has a developed a niche for facelift, rhinoplasty, and hair transplantation surgery.  His advanced techniques in facial reconstruction following skin cancer excision have earned the trust of many of Colorado’s most esteemed dermatologists and their patients.  Dr. Schmidt is honored that his reputation spurred physicians in the community to vote him to join the ranks of Denver 5280 Magazine’s Top Doctors for the past three consecutive years.
