Dr. Calva-Cerqueira completed his training at the prestigious Johns Hopkins/University of Maryland Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery program. His main focus is on aesthetic/cosmetic and complex head-to-toe reconstruction. The Johns Hopkins Hospital has been ranked by US News and World Reports as the #1 hospital in the US for 23 years.

Dr. Calva-Cerqueira obtained his Bachelor education at Georgetown University, where he graduated with honors. He then attended one of the top medical schools in the country, the esteemed Carver College of Medicine. After medical school he completed 7 years of training in General Surgery (Board Certified) at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, one of the top residency programs in the US. During his General Surgery training, he did 2 years of molecular genetics, where he conducted award winning research on cancer biology, and was awarded two grants by the NIH (National Institutes of Health) to performed cutting edge molecular research in cancer genetics.

Dr. Calva-Cerqueira served as the first Administrative Chief Resident in the department of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital, and he is the first recipient, within the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, to receive The Frank I. Coulson Jr. Award for Clinical and Academic Excellence at Johns Hopkins. This is the most prestigious award at Johns Hopkins, and a very selective process by his peers is used to select the individual.
