Dr. Smoot has helped train over 20 residents in the specialty of plastic and reconstructive surgery. Of interest, Dr. Robert Rey of the E-Television show, Dr. 90210, was one of the residents who trained for two years under Dr. Smoot's supervision at the University of Tennessee in Memphis.

Dr. Smoot entered the full-time practice of plastic and reconstructive surgery in the community of Lake Charles, LA beginning in 1998. He practices both aesthetic cosmetic surgery and reconstructive plastic surgery and was board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1986. In 1990, he obtained certification for added qualifications for surgery of the hand. Dr. Smoot is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, and a fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
