Dermatologist Dr. Shondra Smith is a native of Lake Charles, Louisiana. She completed her medical degree in New Orleans, at Tulane University School of Medicine, and also earned a master’s degree in public health from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. She graduated in the top one-third of her class in June 1993. Following medical school, she completed an internal medicine residency at University of Texas Medical Center in Houston. From an early stage in her career as a dermatologist, she has been very involved in research and completed a two-year clinical research fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School Department of Dermatology. She then went on to the University of Kansas Medical Center to complete her Residency in Dermatology.

Dr. Smith remains very active in dermatology research. The majority of her research as a dermatologist to date has focused on psoriasis and the pharmacogenomics of psoriasis therapy. She been involved in clinical research since 1994 and has served as a principal investigator for over 60 clinical trials and basic scientific research studies in the areas of psoriasis, acne, discoid lupus, onchomycosis, alopecia, atopic dermatitis, basal cell carcinoma and melanoma.

Dr. Smith also enjoys cosmetic dermatology. She considers it as much of an art as it is medicine. Since 2004, she has become an expert injector of various dermal fillers and neurotoxins. In order to achieve the maximum patient benefit, her current approach as a cosmetic dermatologist is to use multiple injectable products either alone or in combination with various laser procedures. She received training in various laser techniques during her Fellowship training at Harvard Medical School within the program developed by Dr. Rox Anderson (considered one of the foremost laser experts in the world). She gets great satisfaction from making her patients look and feel their best.
