Profile

Dr. Curtis Crane is a board-certified plastic surgeon who has a very unique background: he is one of the world’s only surgeons who is trained as both a plastic surgeon and reconstructive urologist with fellowship training in transgender surgery. With this combination of specialties, Dr. Crane is uniquely qualified to treat patients requiring major genitourinary reconstruction, such as in female to male and male to female gender confirmation surgery.

Dr. Crane graduated magna cum laude with a degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University, one of the nation’s most rigorous engineering programs. He co-oped at DePuy Orthopedics making hip implants and became very interested in medicine. He chose to continue his education at the University of Iowa College of Medicine. Upon completion, he was accepted to the prestigious Dartmouth Hitchcock Urology program in Lebanon, New Hampshire, where he completed a six-year residency.

Because of his interest in complicated urologic surgery, Dr. Crane pursued a fellowship in trauma and reconstructive urology at Detroit Receiving Hospital with the distinguished Dr. Richard Santucci. This was followed by a full three-year residency in plastic and reconstructive surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Dr. Crane traveled to Europe to complete a fellowship specific to transgender surgery. He has worked extensively with Dr. Miroslav Djordjevic in Belgrade, Serbia, Dr. Preecha’s team in Bangkok, Thailand, and with Dr. Monstrey in Ghent, Belgium.

Where do I Start…. Hey My name is Legend and I’m a transguy. I had RFF Phalloplasty’s surgery on 01/17/2024 at the hospital at Westlake in Austin, Tx. I was told the surgery went well by Dr Deleon. On about the second night of my hospital stay I had contracted bacteria in my blood from a needle stick from one of the nurses. I had a fever of 103 degrees and it took at least 24 hours for them to get my fever under control. I recovered from my surgery and went home at 5 weeks. I went back to work and had some issues with the stream of my pee, it had weakened(reduced). I was unable to hold my pee so I had to start wearing adult diapers. I started to have strong smelling urine and It got to the point where I was barely able to pee maybe 3 months post op. I was messaging Judah back and forth and he was trying to be helpful. I went to the ER twice(2x) in regards to my painful urination and lack of ability to fully void my bladder. I went to a care now 2x as a recommendation by the crane center to get a urine culture. I had high white blood cell counts in both urine culture tests indicating an infection. I had a cystoscopy dilation surgery to reduce my stricture on May 10, 2024. Dr. Santucci stated I had a medium sized stricture. Maybe 3 weeks later my stricture came back and I scheduled another surgery for October 7, 2024 with the crane center called Optilume that required a down payment of $2600. This is the show stopper. I have a patient balance with the crane center and that I have been unable to pay on because of lack of money. I’m 2 months behind. My surgery for the optilume was canceled because the crane center has a policy that my patient balance account has to be in good standing for them to proceed with scheduling surgeries. Now I’ve been to the ER two times, I’ve been to carenow two times, I’ve driven to Austin for the 2nd surgery to temporarily fix the stricture. And now I have to have a 3rd surgery that requires $2600. It’s incredibly expensive to have gender affirmation surgeries. Crane center and Westlake Hospital asked my Blue Cross Blue shield insurance company for over $200,000 after my RFF Phalloplasty procedure. And I still owed a balance of over $6000 after my insurance paid out. The percentage of complications after these surgeries are much higher than the paperwork shows. Despite you developing a complication that WILL affect your quality of life and could cause further complications with other organs if not working properly. The crane center is very clear. They want their money.

This this office is so unprofessional and a big inconvenience!! I had my consultation rescheduled due to a "Training" that need to take place.... "ok I Understood" then I get another email stating that my consultation was rescheduled again due to Dr. Mundinger having a "Family Emergency" ... "FINE" BUT THEN I get another email stating that there has been a shift in availability and my appointment was going to be rescheduled AGAIN .... At this point it has been 5 months that passed and still trying to get a consultation with this office!! I went ahead and selected another doctor for my procedure I had no more time to be wasting with this office!!

It’s worth noting that this office charges for consultations when most other surgeons offering these surgery’s do not. Consultations nearly everywhere else are completely free - I know that from experience of having had many of them before I chose my surgeon (and never paying for a single one). Considering they are serving a community known to be poor more often than not, charging the large amount of money they charge just for the consultation is disrespectful. I never got a consultation for two reasons. 1: I was too broke to afford $250 for 15 minutes. That’s how long most consults are. 2: they refused to book my consult unless I was willing to book my surgery and pay for it out of pocket at the same time…. What’s the point of the consult then??? I felt deeply that I was being sold a surgery instead of evaluated for one. There are many mixed reviews coming out of this office and I know many personal friends who have experienced deep medical trauma going through crane center. Dr. Crane is well known in our community for his lawsuits :) I live 45 minutes away but I still flew all the way to San Francisco for my surgery. And yes, the consult at that office was free. 10 years of researching surgeons and crane center was the most unprofessional and frankly, scary experience I had dealing with offices all over the country.

I had an awesome experience getting my top surgery here! They took my insurance everyone was super kind. I can't recommend this place enough! Dr. Ashley DeLeon is a great surgeon. Update 2 months post op: My results look amazing!! I was a little worried about how much out of pocket was going to be but it ended up being $0. The crane center is amazing. My results are very cosmetically sound I look very natural small scar. Can't recommend this place enough very kind and professional.

This is really bizarre seeing anyone say anything bad about Dr. Crane. When I got my surgery he notified me all the risks and we had many consultations....
