Profile

Dr. Ray is a double-board certified Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeon with 20 years of post-graduate experience.  As a diplomate of both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery, and as a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Dr. Ray has completed residencies in General Surgery and Plastic Surgery as well as a two-year post-graduate research fellowship.  Following his residency training, he was selected to participate in the prestigious reconstructive surgery fellowship as an instructor at the world-renowned Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) Cancer Center in New York, NY.  During his time at MSK, he became acquainted with the advanced reconstructive and microsurgical techniques he employs in his practice today.

Due to his expertise in advanced reconstruction and plastic surgery, Dr. Ray was recruited in 2016 to join the faculty at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles where he has achieved the academic rank of Assistant Professor of Surgery.  He specializes in reconstruction after cancer, trauma and in gender-confirming procedures.

Dr. Ray’s philosophy is to listen to his patients and tailor the surgical plan to individuals’ needs, wishes and lifestyle.  One approach does not apply to every patient.  In the highly competitive Beverly Hills and West Los Angeles market, there are a great many plastic surgeons who offer reconstructive surgery but very few of them who are as extensively trained and who offer the full spectrum of surgical options.   For example, every plastic surgeon knows how to perform breast augmentation with implants.  But how many of them perform autologous breast reconstruction and flap procedures or use microsurgical techniques that may eliminate the need for breast implants entirely?  Dr. Ray is one a very small number of surgeons performing all of these procedures as faculty at a reputable academic medical center in Los Angeles.

Absolutely horrible experience here in the emergency room. A three hour wait for a dangerous situation on top of being spoken to in a short and condescending manner by nearly all of the staff. There seem to be a few nice people that work here but Mostly dismissive and sometimes disrespectful. Absolutely no sense of urgency, Whatsoever. I would never come back to this hospital. Experienced extra trauma on top of an Already traumatic medical situation.

This review is specifically for Nurse Gary in ER. I was waiting in observation to see a physician in a bed in the hallway. Gary told me that I would be waiting to see the physician. 2 hours later, Gary not once checked on me. Mind you, I was there for a kidney infection, and had to ask 3 different people (who kept telling me that they’d get my nurse) to finally get a water from some random woman working at one of the desks, which is important for the antibiotic I was on. And my pain was getting worse. Thinking it was weird no one checked on me or gave me any updates, I asked again to see Nurse Gary. While I was waiting, I saw him chatting and joking with coworkers. I love that for him, liking your coworkers is important, but please check on your patients even if only to say “how ya doing? How’s your pain? Still waiting on the physician btw.” Gary finally strolls over and asks what’s up. I asked him what was going on because I hadn’t heard any sort of communication after 2 hours of laying in the hospital bed. I make it a point to be polite and pleasant with any sort of care provider because I’ve seen what kind of people they have to deal with sometimes, but he copped a condescending attitude reiterating that we were still waiting on the physician and cutting me off while I was trying to ask questions. Meanwhile a very ill man in the bed in front of me started puking over and over again. I told Gary I was experiencing more pain but couldn’t handle the man vomiting anymore in the hallway and asked if I could leave because I was about to be sick myself. He said “yep,” not once offered to check on approximately how much longer the physician would be or to check on seeing if he could move my bed to a different hallway. So I left without any treatment, still scared as I write this review that my kidney infection might take a turn for the worse. I have friends and family who work in ICU and ER, so I understand how difficult a job it is. But the lack of care, attention, bedside manner and empathy from Gary (on top of the man vomiting every 3 minutes) just sent me over the edge. Who knows how much longer I would be waiting for him to check on me while some guy is violently vomiting a few feet from me, and then be made to feel uncomfortable by the nurse’s attitude. It’s a joke that I got that automated text from them in the photo about caring about making me comfortable. So if I get sepsis, that’s on you Gary. What a waste of a $150 copay, and 6+ hours of my life waiting for someone to give a hoot about my health (literally the profession you chose and get paid to do).

I had the worst experience at this hospital. I have permanent scarring in my lung from being Intubated for too long.. I was over sedated... My ivs hurt and burned they blew out so many viens that the fluid was just seeping into my tissue... My arms were so swollen and bruised by the time I left. My rib was broken during sugery and no one told me. They would make me wait forever for help with the bathroom and I was on diurectics... I could hear everything in the rooms next to me, my room was right off the office so lights always on talking, banging around... The food was sythectic and disgusting.. My friend who is a doctor was atunned, said I always thought this would be the hospital is go to if I was sick, I'm seriously going to rethink it. Of course there were some great staff, but some truly horrible ones with zero compassion. Would be my last resort!

Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, a nonprofit institution boasting over 900 beds, is at the forefront of healthcare in California. The Cedars-Sinai Health System, which includes the hospital, boasts a formidable staff of over 2,000 physicians and 10,000 employees, supplemented by a dedicated team of 2,000 volunteers and over 40 community groups. My recent visit to this hospital, prompted by my father's admission to the ICU, left me deeply impressed by the exceptional quality of staff, the efficient system in place, and the cutting-edge equipment available. It comes as no surprise that Cedars-Sinai is recognized as California's premier hospital system. 4/4/2024 update What deeply impressed me about Cedars-Sinai, beyond its state-of-the-art facilities and medical equipment, was the genuine kindness and professionalism displayed by the attending staff, particularly the nurses assigned to my father's ICU. Their compassion and service extended not only to patients but also to families. From their comforting words to small gestures like providing toothbrushes, toothpaste, and hot tea, they went above and beyond to meet our needs. Additionally, playing relaxing and spiritual music in the room and maintaining cleanliness added to the organized and caring atmosphere. These acts exemplify their dedication to respecting and serving humanity, especially those facing agony and sorrow. During my time there, I felt surrounded by angels, particularly during the Easter season. Services like the chaplain service, administered by Fr. John Sigler, and the provision of the Sacrament of the Sick for my father brought me immense happiness and comfort. The granting of a plenary indulgence for my father was a profound blessing. Furthermore, I was pleasantly surprised to learn that a social worker would continue to support us for 13 months after my father's passing. I would like to express my gratitude to some of the staff members who left a lasting impression with their support: Jean, Charlene, Hailey, SOL, and Laura and Eileen, the hospice nurse. Their care and dedication made a difficult time more bearable.
