I came in for a consultation about liposuction to remove large fat deposits caused by insulin injections, using insurance, as it is arguably a medical necessity. Dr. Samson was short and seemed annoyed to be in the room with me, presumably because I was not a cash cow for him to be paid by out-of-pocket, but I tried to take it in stride because I was at least glad I managed to secure an appointment. He tried to upsell a tummy tuck by saying he would only be willing to remove 50% of the deposits so as to avoid loose skin, which is a fair concern to an extent, but I assume he wanted to push an addition as well. That’s fine. I left the appointment and received a call the next day by an employee named Alyssa who said that their billing department “didn’t know what code to use with my insurance for this” and that “it wouldn’t be covered.” I called my insurance and they confirmed which CPT code(s) they could run, and when I explained my reason for the procedure, she said that all the provider would have to do was start a PA, and that coverage for this had been acquired in the past. I called the office back and informed the employee of this, providing her with the CPT code they could run, and explaining that it would simply require a PA, and that my insurance had indeed covered liposuction when medically necessary, as in my case. She asked me what I meant by PA (?), and I said a prior authorization. Then, as if to demonstrate that she did not hear anything I said, she replied “no, insurance won’t cover this, they won’t cover it for anyone” (? I just said that my insurance has covered and can cover liposuction when medically necessary?). As I said to the employee on the call before we hung up, I would have appreciated a bit more honesty in this exchange…it was clear Dr. Samson and his office simply didn’t want to go through the effort to deal with insurance on this, and maybe they felt even more emboldened to reject me because I was a medicaid patient. Slimy, gross, and a waste of time, with a cold doctor and cold receptionist. Boo. But at least his assistant (Krista or Karla maybe? I forget) was really sweet. So 2/5 overall.

It's been over a year since my breast reduction surgery with Dr. William Samson, and I can confidently say it has literally changed my life.
