Before opening his own practice, Dr. Berkowitz started his career in academic medicine as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Plastic Surgery at Stanford. He also served as Director of the Burn Unit at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, where he treated highly complex reconstructive cases.

In 1982, he left academics to open his private practice, where he built a reputation for thoughtful, technically advanced work in both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery. Over the years, he’s taught surgical techniques around the world and helped mentor the next generation of plastic surgeons, though he’s quick to shift the focus back to patient care, where his heart has always been.

Dr. Berkowitz is best known for his work in rhinoplasty, especially revision rhinoplasty—a highly specialized area that requires both technical skill and a deep understanding of facial anatomy. He’s a Past President and current Board Member of the Rhinoplasty Society, the largest international organization focused solely on this type of surgery.

In the mid-90s, he developed the spreader flap technique, which made it possible to reshape the nose while preserving airflow and a natural look. Before this, most rhinoplasties left patients with a “done” appearance and breathing issues. Today, his approach is used around the world as a go-to method for maintaining structure and function.

He also helped bring ultrasonic rhinoplasty to the U.S., using piezoelectric tools to shape the nasal bones more precisely and with less trauma than traditional techniques. It’s a game-changer for revision cases, where the tissues are already delicate and scarred.

Beyond rhinoplasty, Dr. Berkowitz has a long history of using fat grafting in facial rejuvenation. This method uses a patient’s own fat to restore lost volume in the face. It’s a natural way to soften features and improve skin tone, and he’s been doing it long before it became widely popular.

For patients interested in breast surgery, Dr. Berkowitz developed an endoscopic breast augmentation technique that places implants through a tiny incision in the armpit, leaving no scar on the breast itself. He also offers an auto-implant lift, which reshapes a patient’s own breast tissue without needing an implant at all.
