Gary A. TumaDr

With deep ties to the region, Dr. Tuma is a well-respected plastic surgeon who is double board certified by both the American Board of Plastic Surgery and the American Board of Surgery. In addition, he has achieved fellowship status in the American College of Surgeons (FACS). Prior to establishing Plastic Surgery Associates of NJ, Dr. Tuma practiced at Jefferson Plastic Surgery in Philadelphia where he was an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Surgery. During this time he was a member of the faculty at Jefferson University Hospital, Albert Einstein Medical Center, and Methodist Hospital.

Dr. Tuma received his bachelor's degree from Boston College and went on to obtain his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College. He then completed his general surgery residency at Jefferson University Hospital. During his surgical residency he spent an extra year as a Harrison Research Fellow in plastic surgery at the University of Pennsylvania. His research involved looking at the use of adult fat as a source for stem cells and tissue engineering for soft tissue augmentation. Subsequently, he completed a plastic surgery residency at the prestigious Emory University in Atlanta where breast reconstruction approaches using the tram flap and latissimus flap as well as reconstruction using muscle flaps were developed. While at Emory, he was elected chief resident by the Chairman, T. Roderick Hester, MD.

In addition to providing outstanding clinical care to his patients, Dr. Tuma has been the recipient of various research grants and has published numerous articles and book chapters on breast reconstruction, soft tissue reconstruction and spinal wound reconstruction. He has also been an invited lecturer at teaching institutions, given presentations at local, regional and international forums and has received numerous awards for excellence in teaching.
