Education and Training
Dr. Butler's journey into the world of medicine began with a foundation in both academics and athletics. Dr. Butler attended Florida State University where he excelled in biology and chemistry. Dr. Butler's college years were marked by his academic achievements and athletic prowess; he played for the FSU lacrosse team and even joined the FSU football team as a walk-on kicker. He earned his Bachelor of Science in biology and then pursued a graduate degree in chemistry. His desire to blend his love of science with a passion for helping others ultimately led him to the field of medicine. He was accepted into the University of Florida College of Medicine, where his journey into the world of plastic surgery began.
While at the University of Florida, Dr. Butler was honored as one of only 40 students selected to participate in the prestigious Program in Medical Sciences. This unique program provided him with invaluable "real world" experience, working closely with practicing physicians alongside his medical studies. It was here that Dr. Butler's interest in plastic and reconstructive surgery was ignited, particularly through his work with renowned plastic surgeon Dr. H. Louis Hill. Following his medical degree, Dr. Butler pursued a general surgery residency at the University of North Carolina's program at New Hanover Regional Medical Center in Wilmington, NC. Over the five-year residency, he refined his surgical skills and developed a reputation for his ability to communicate complex medical concepts to his patients in a relatable manner. To further specialize, Dr. Butler accepted a fellowship in plastic surgery at the University of Utah, where he trained under some of the nation's leading academic surgeons.
