Profile

Deowall Chattar-Cora, MD is a Board Certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon. Born and raised in New York City, Dr. Dee, as many of his patients call him, dreamed of becoming a doctor from age four. In college, his love for interdisciplinary learning and a drive to understand the human experience spurred him to major in liberal arts studies at Sarah Lawrence College in New York. Dr. Dee not only gained a solid foundation in the sciences, but he also studied history, psychology, art, literature, among others. This breadth of study continues to serve him well in understanding all types of persons, experiences and needs.Dr. Dee completed his medical education at the prestigious New York University School of Medicine, where he honed his skills in the sciences and nurtured his desire to understand and help people. But he also realized the importance of research, of uncovering and learning better ways to heal. He spent a year after medical school conducting research and publishing new findings in several medical journals.

It was during his research year that Dr. Dee realized he wanted to specialize in plastic surgery. To prepare for this complex field, he completed a five-year general surgery residency at Morristown Memorial Hospital in New Jersey. While there, he was on two occasions elected as educator of the year. He next returned to his roots, to the hospital where he was born: the Jacobi Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York, where he spent a year doing a burn surgery fellowship. He learned a lot about treating badly burned patients and performing complex operations.

But the height of Dr. Dee’s training was his subsequent three years of plastic and reconstructive surgery residency, at the University of Texas Health Science Center, in San Antonio. He excelled in the many technical facets of plastic and reconstructive surgery. But more importantly, he perfected his skills in always putting his patients first.

Dr. Dee also continued to believe in the value of research, as a way of advancing the field and helping patients. He published several articles on cosmetic and plastic surgery. One of his studies was cited as the best clinical research at the annual meeting of the Texas Society of plastic surgery. His training program also bestowed on him the Jaime Garza award for clinical and research excellence. And a diehard believer in excellent training, like an orchestra which never takes practicing their craft lightly, Dr. Deowall Chattar-Cora completed an additional year of training in hand surgery to further refine his skills.

After his vast training, Dr. Dee joined the faculty of the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio medical school, as an Assistant Professor of Surgery. During his more than five and half years working at the medical school, he held dual appointments with the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the Department of Orthopedic Surgery. He was chosen by the plastic surgery residents as the educator of the year. Dr. Dee has also made several humanitarian trips to Africa over the years, where he performed many complex and life-saving plastic and reconstructive surgeries on those who would otherwise had no access to his expertise or be able to afford such operations.

I was visiting plaza 2 and checking in for a diagnostic procedure. While being checked in my administrative staff, my ostomy bag suddenly began to leak. I let the clerk know and she seemed to seriously want to help me. She directed me to the nearest men's room where I began the process of removing the ostomy back and applying a new one. During the middle of the process, a security guard came into the restroom and told me that other people in the building had begun to complain about my actions. He emphatically told me that I would have to leave the restroom immediately. After explaining what I was doing, and that I couldn't just walk out of the restroom without completing the bag change, he again repeated that I would need to leave immediately. He then left the restroom but came back about 3 minutes later to again demand that I leave the restroom immediately. I again explained to him that I had to complete the process of the bag change for my own medical welfare, but also to keep from possibly contaminating the medial plaza building. He again repeated himself and demanded that I leave. He did not return, and I was able to complete the bag change. When I returned to the clerk's desk, I explained to her what had happened. She seemed extremely upset with the situation and stated that she was reporting the incident immediately. I explained to her that I was not interested in getting anyone in trouble, but only wanted to see that their facility properly handled matters like mine in the future. I explained that the problem was two fold, with the first problem being that I was directed to a bathroom that apparently was not set up to accommodate by medical condition. I advised that if their was some other bathroom that allowed for individual occupancy, that I should have been helped to reach it. My seconded concern was that security staff needed to be trained in how to properly respond to patient care matters like mine. I explained that the process of demanding that I leave was not acceptable and that all security staff member needed to be properly trained on how to assist patients in the future. This would include notifying medical staff, getting assistance, etc. I was told that a patient advocate would contact me regarding my concern. I received a phone call from a patient advocate to documented my concern. I asked that I be contacted regarding the outcome of the entire process and what action had been taken to insure that this did not happen again. To date, several months later, I have not received any response to my original complaint. The lack of any further follow up contact leaves me wondering if other patients remain at risk for being harassed by security staff members or that patients are not being properly assisted by medical/administrative staff.
