Education

Dr. Zelones graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of California, Irvine and then completed his medical degree at the Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine. He completed his general surgery internship at the University of California, Los Angeles and then finished his general surgery residency at the University of California, San Diego. His plastic, reconstructive, and hand surgery residency was at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, which prepared him well for an additional year of microsurgery fellowship at Stanford University involving free autologous breast reconstruction and lymphedema surgery. Additionally, he received training in facial cosmetic surgery in Miami, Florida and in reconstructive burn surgery at the University of Southern California.

Credentials

Dr. Zelones is board certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery and is board certified in plastic surgery by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. He is on the teaching faculty of the Lahey Clinic and serves as Clinical Instructor at Maine Medical Center for Tufts University School of Medicine.

Why Plastic Surgery in Portland, Maine?

Dr. Zelones joined Plastic + Hand Surgical Associates in 2019. As a resident in plastic, reconstructive, and hand surgery at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center he had the opportunity to work with the Plastic + Hand surgeons. He enjoyed working with the group as everyone was extremely talented but also very easy to get along with. The lifestyle in Maine is second to none and the Portland area also reminds him of his hometown of San Diego.

Philosophy of Care

Dr. Zelones believes that plastic surgery is not another surgical specialty but a way of thinking about surgical problems. Techniques learned from training allow us to operate on skin/muscles/tendons/vessels/nerves/bones from head to toe on all patients regardless of their age. It is important to have a plan “A” for a surgical problem but more importantly to have a plan “B” and plan “C” in case your initial plan does not work.

Update 12/18/25: come to find out, the scheduler for Dr. Turko was NOT on vacation at all. I had to call back again this week (two weeks after my initial consult) because I still hadn’t gotten a call back and it turns out their surgical center flooded “a couple of weeks ago”. But why the reception staff and other scheduling staff wouldn’t have said that and instead say Turko’s scheduler was on vacation for a week is beyond me. She was out for one day. Really poor communication in this practice and as you can see from their generic response they don’t seem really concerned with improving it. Original review: Dr. Turko and his surgical team are wonderful. The new facility is beautiful. But be warned - if the scheduler for your particular surgeon is on vacation apparently no one fills in for anyone so you need to wait until that scheduler returns from their time off. This recently happened to me - went in on a Thursday for a consult and was told the scheduler would call me. The following Wednesday I called them since I had received no call. I was told the scheduler was busy so they’d leave her a message. Called again the next day (Thursday) only to be informed the scheduler is now on vacation until the following Wednesday and that no one else could do her job, I guess. Weird way to do business. I don’t recall it being this challenging for a prior procedure a few years ago.

Dr. Hickle is amazing! I needed a reduction because of size and pain. The team at P&HSA worked together right from the start, explaining everything fully and doing everything from working with my insurance to making sure they kept in touch every step of the way. Given knowledge of insurance companies in the past, I was resigned to not being able to have this done. The team called me to tell me it was a go and set up all appointments needed. I was fully expecting to be flat afterwards but Dr. Hickle truly sculpted the results. I've been recommending her to everyone who asked questions and am glad I could do it further thru this platform.

Dr. Kutz and his whole team were FANTASTIC!! He listened to my concerns, explained all my options, and answered all my questions in detail. I never once felt rushed. Everyone from the office to the pre op/post op staff was kind, responsive, and supportive. It was such a positive environment. Only 2 weeks post op and hands down the best decision I’ve ever made!! Can’t recommend Dr. Kutz and the Hand and Plastics team enough!!

I had a breast augmentation performed by Dr. Hickle. After breastfeeding three kids, I experienced some sagging and desired an augmentation, but not a lift, as I scar easily and understood that a lift involves more incisions. Dr. Hickle was incredibly knowledgeable and informative. She understood my desires and had the expertise to achieve the results I wanted. Choosing the right breast volume and projection can be overwhelming, each option looks different on various body types. That's why it's essential to select a plastic surgeon you can trust. Ultimately, you need to have faith in your surgeon to make the right decisions. Dr. Hickle definitely made the right choice for me, and I am absolutely obsessed with my new breasts!

The care at Plastic and Hand is top notch. I went in for a medically needed surgery. Dr Kutz does wonderful work and really listens. His work is amazing. There are a team of Nurse Practitioners that are very attentive and informative if you need aftercare in between your check ups with your surgeon. The clerical staff are friendly and a pleasure to be around. I highly recommend Plastic and Hand.
