May 31, 2026Dr. Chen’s precise and thoughtful work make her an excellent surgeon, but it is her empathy, care, and advocacy for her patients that make her an exceptional doctor and human being. I’m so thankful she was on our team during a very stressful time, and I’d recommend her to anyone, especially parents of small children requiring surgery.
Dr. Chen performed palate repair surgery on our 11-month-old daughter in 2019. Our daughter had a fairly large cleft and we were concerned both about the repair itself and the potential that a fistula may form or we would need follow-up surgery to completely close the cleft. Dr. Chen took the time to explain in great detail her plan for our daughter, and she never made us feel hurried. Although I was nervous on the day of the surgery, I was also confident our daughter was in great hands.
The surgery itself went smoothly, but our daughter took more time than normal recovering and eating again. Most kids go home after one or two nights in the hospital, and we went home after four nights. But we never felt alone—Dr. Chen was in close contact with us via text throughout that entire period and personally checked in on us in the recovery room on more than one occasion. Dr. Chen was also instrumental in helping us get discharged from the hospital: she helped us convince the hospitalist that our daughter was likely to recover faster in the comfort of her own home. Once we were home, Dr. Chen continued to stay in close contact with us until our daughter was eating well again and any threat of dehydration was behind us.
Dr. Chen’s surgical work has held up incredibly well. Our daughter is now 3 years old and thriving. She started speaking and saying sounds that would have previously been impossible starting just a few months after surgery. Her palate repair healed perfectly and to date she has not required any follow-up surgery. She graduated from speech therapy and is living a completely normal 3-year-old life—no one meeting her today would guess she ever had any issues.
And even today—years after she performed the surgery—Dr. Chen remains happy to answer any questions we have. After a recent accident where our daughter injured her mouth, Dr. Chen looked at a picture of the injury and eased our minds that the accident likely didn’t affect her repair area, and then found some time on her schedule for us to come in and get it checked out to make sure everything was fine (sure enough, it was).
